The REAL story behind the viral sensation gymnast | Katelyn Ohashi | Rebels | BBC Sport

[Music] six times this year her floor routine earned a perfect 10. ohashi scored another perfect 10. what makes me a rebel standing out and not trying to fit into this box what you see on the floor with me smiling and laughing that’s how i feel it was electrifying floor routine that turned ucla gymnast star caitlyn ohashi into a viral sensation i couldn’t stop watching your energy and enthusiasm is contagious i started gymnastics when i was three years old by the time i was 12 i was on the national team quitting was never an option she is world class i was in the public eye caitlyn ohashi wins the 2013 att american cup um it’s kind of overwhelming it’s like amazing and unbelievable and just so exciting and then everything was ripped away from me all at once i was told i would never do gymnastics again when i was 16 because i had a horrible back injury because i was so unhappy mentally it just triggered the rest of my body i was going through a lot of body image struggles i really didn’t like myself all my validation came from gymnastics now it’s like what am i worth [Music] i went to public school for the first time that year like decided to reset my goal path imagine my surprise i validate caitlin ohashi it was like i got a call from kobe bryant or serena williams she asked me when was the last time you were happy in the sport and she finally said when i was 11. dismount double pike beautiful i had a lot of healing left to do probably wasn’t until my sophomore year when i could say that i was like fully fully happy again i started taking ownership i knew what i needed to do to be my best self finding my passions outside the sport and that what made me happier inside the gym the goal isn’t to love ourselves if and when it is supposed to stay there unconditionally this is no sin i wanted to portray myself in ways that allowed other people to relate and not feel alone it’s not about winning and the expectations of other people it’s about what truly makes you happy she took a break from gymnastics and then came back and ohashi is going to go celebrate with her classmates it is a 10 for ohashi and ucla hits 198 plus as great as the internet is and social media and a lot of the praise that you received you also had people that were body shaming you yeah probably since i was 14 in the gym outside of the gym on the internet so it’s something that you could never really escape people around us try to tell us what we should be you should always be yourself truly [Applause] [Music] you
