Oh, well, that’s fun.
Are we actually on the glacier now? Yes.
The largest glacier in Europe.
So how deep is the glacier beneath us right now?
Probably around 200 meters here, average 400 meters.
Wow, and does it
does it make an exciting noise as it makes its way up to
it squeaks
Yes. You hear a
sort of
The growling of the glacier as it moves
I’d love to hear that.
Well, you’ll notice I’ve taken my gloves off.
Yes. These,
it turns out these are heated. Yes.
Who knew?
Well, I knew.
I didn’t want to tell you in the beginning.
There has to be a surprise.
Come on.
Come on.
As we set off again
across this vast glacier, 3000 miles square,
I can’t help thinking about the sober fact that every year
we’re losing glaciers like this at a truly alarming rate,
which makes this both an exhilarating ride and a sort of guilt trip.
If I’m honest.
It’s warm.
Very warm. Yes.
I was thinking it was going to be freezing cold up here.
Yeah, but the sun is shining.
The wind’s not bad. No.
And all this all this under there, is just deep, deep, thick ice.
I mean, are we taking a colossal risk or is this relatively safe?
Of course, we have passed a few crevasses, but they are covered
with snow, so it’s easy for the snowmobiles to pass them.
This valley is full of ice and flowing
in a very, very slow kind of a way. Yes.
And carving out the rock as it goes, is that how it works?
The easiest way to explain is to grab a chocolate bar.
Oh, not just any chocolate bar, my favourite kind of nutty chocolate bar.
Super nice.
Take this chocolate bar, split it, and you can see how the chocolate goes
into a crevasse.
I see. Yes.
And below we have the caramel that is flexible and nice.
And you can stretch it like this.
Oh, I see.
And below that, we have the peanuts.
That’s the rocks.
Very nice. Mm.
You won’t get that. Do you want some?
Do I ever.
Just for you. Cheers!
That crevasse is just delicious.
Yeah.
Our town
is famous for the lobster.
The coastline around Iceland is basically lava and rocks.
And the lobster that we have here is the one that builds
a labyrinth on the bottom of the ocean with sand and clay.
Yeah. In front of the glacier
we have got plenty of sand and clay.
So the lobster say, “come on over here.
It’s just how we love it.”
Yeah, basically, this is the lobster area in front of the glacier.
That’s delicious.
I’ll have to look out for lobster on the
on the menu. Oh,
I have a surprise for you.
What, another one?
What are the chances
it’s fresh lobster.
Do you want some?
Oh I was hoping you’d do that!
Oh, you bet.
Oh, that’s amazing.
And then Iceland we use sauce with everything.
You have sauce with everything?
Everything.
What sort of sauce is that? That is Garlic
Garlic sauce. Mmhmm
That’s very kind.
This is amazing.
And now we are getting the view
to our mountains.
That is called Lobster Claw.
Can you see over there there are three peaks.
They are named Lobster Claw.
