Filming Galapagos Giant Tortoise Hatchlings | Eden: Untamed Planet | BBC Earth

[Music]
we have spent so long just waiting for
tortoises to move that we’ve started to
think
they’re playing mind games with us
maybe that’s the secret to their
longevity tell you what though i prefer
to live life in the fast lane
[Music]
now these hatchlings have emerged we
can’t keep up with them they’re they’re
everywhere they’re like tiny little
clockwork toys that are wound up to the
full and they’ve just been set off and
they’re in every direction
[Music]
[Music]
is
these nests have been marked
by the park so they know exactly where
they are
they know roughly what time of year the
eggs were laid
yesterday
the mothers
pee on the top
to help this hardening to sort of crust
and the baby tortoises have to dig and
dig and dig and it can take up to a
month
for them to actually emerge from here
[Music]
[Music]
so
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Applause]
if they’re lucky those hatchlings we
filmed
tiny tiny hatchlings will grow to be
giants
maybe live
100 150 years even more possibly they
might live out their lives like these
ones have
like tortoises always having galapagos
or they might see a world that has
altered it completely
they can’t change that outcome only we
can do that
